Backpacking Adventure in Accursed Mountains

The best way to experience the Accursed Mountains of Albania, Montenegro, and Kosovo is by hiking independently with a small group. This trip is designed to enjoy an unforgettable combination of natural beauty and the cultural richness of the Albanian Alps. The Accursed Mountain trail leads through one of the most remote and wild mountainous regions of the Western Balkans. By using shepherd paths and footways, the trail winds through high alpine mountains up to 2300m above sea level.

During this trek, we will most of the time sleep on the tents and that’s why we don’t need to exactly make a precis itinerary which we have to follow. Only on the first day, we will sleep in a guesthouse in Theth, the starting point of the trek. Having maps, GPS, and of course a guide with you, would be very much easy to organize the rest of the trip. On the Itinerary below, we will give you some highlights of the places we should hike through.

CAMPING & BACKPACKING ADVENTURE IN THE ACCURSED MOUNTAINS OF ALBANIA AND KOSOVO

Is this adventure for you?

This trek is suitable for keen trekkers who are prepared to put in some physical preparation. For the most part, our walks follow good shepherd trails yet the terrain can be very rocky in parts, winding through high alpine mountains. Most of the trails are not well-marked, but some are. However, having a very experienced mountain guide with you, should not concern you.

The average trek every day would be something between 17-23 Km with a cumulative elevation of 1300m maximum.

What's Included

Accommodation in guesthouses and tents, meals as written in the daily itinerary; group airport transfer and other transports required by the itinerary; all entrance fees; skilled tour leader.

ITINERARY

Day 1: Welcome to Albania! Drive to Thethi National Park.

Meet and greet with the guide in Tirana International Airport, followed by a transfer to Shkodra, one of the oldest inhabited cities in Albania with a 2500-year-old history. We will introduce the city first then drive towards Theth, passing through the beautiful Valley of Boga. We will stop at Qafe Thore – the diagonal Pass, to enjoy the spectacular mountainous landscape unfolding in front of us. We will switch to a local van and drive downhill to a nice guesthouse in the village where we will stay overnight and enjoy a tasty homemade meal.

Drive: 3hrs; Accommodation in a guesthouse.

Day 2: Trek from Theth via Qafa e Pejes to Jezerca Lake.

Starting the trek very early for an option to hike up Arapi or Jezerca summit. For almost 3 hours of hiking, we will reach Qafa e Pejes (Peja Pass) from where we can choose whether to go to Arapi peak then down to Ropojana Valley or Climb up Jezerca peak 2694m then down to the spectacular Jezerca big Lake. An amazing place. Most probably we will stay 2 nights here. Accommodation in tents.

Trek: 20 km, 8-9 hours, elevation gain: 1400m; elevation loss: 900m.

Day 3: Jezerca Lake – Vuthaj – Bori pass – Stanet e Drezhanit.

From the lake, we will start walking down to Vuthaj, Montenegro, 1060m. We will stop for a break and to take some other food or things we need then continue hiking up to Bori peak 1950m. There is an option to climb Kollata peak, the highest peak in Montenegro, but we need extra 3-4 hours up and down back again. Since we are camping, we can do anything we want.

Trek: 17 km, 7-8 hours, elevation gain: 780m; elevation loss: 400m.

Day 4: Stanet e Drezhanit – Cerem – Doberdol pasture.

This trek could be relatively easy and gentle. From Drezhan, we will walk down to Cerem, 1 hr 30 min. We will rest a little bit to a guesthouse in Cerem, perhaps some food, coffees, teas, beers then walk again to Doberdol. Doberdol is a unique place indeed. Very basic; no electricity, no signal, no internet - plenty of huts, thousands of sheep, cows, and horses. It is a good idea to explore this a little more this place and perhaps stay two nights in this magical place. Accommodation in mountain huts.

Trek: 20 km, 7-8 hours, elevation gain: 980m; elevation loss: 400m.

Day 5: Doberdol – Dashi Lake - Doberdol.

If we stay one more night in Doberdol, we will have a chance to climb Three Border Peak, very close and easy, or walk-in some other direction, for example to Dashi Lake for a swim or another place. It is all up to us to decide what to do. Accommodation in mountain huts.

Trek: 12 km, 5-6 hours, elevation gain: 700m; elevation loss: 700m.

Day 6: Doberdol – Gjeravica Summit – Prizren.

The last day of the trek is from Doberdol via Gjeravica Summit 2656m to Gropa Erenikut then to Prizren. Gjeravica is the highest peak in Kosovo and is totally worth going up. On the trail, there are two glacial lakes, Heart Lake and Big Lake of Gjeravica. After we finish the trek, we will go to the Grand Hotel Gjeravica for a very delicious lunch then two hours drive to Prizren. It is absolutely an amazing city to stay in. The next day you will be transferred to Tirana.

Trek: 15 km, 7-8 hours, elevation gain: 990m; elevation loss: 860m.
